Badab War: Fire Hawks Tactical Squad WIP

Things have been moving more slowly lately as I've been working on the Chapter lists for my Betrayal at Badab project. Most of the chapters are complete now, so it's back to the painting table.

I'm close to finishing off my Fire Hawks tactical squad. Here they are so far.

Once this squad is done, it's back to the Mantis Warriors for their second tactical squad. After that, I'm thinking of doing a Mantis Warriors assault squad or sniper squad with Tranquility Pattern bolt rifles in the yellow camo scheme. Not sure though. I might also switch gears to do some Red Scorpions using the Mk IV plastics from my Betrayal at Calth boxes... or maybe a Fire Hawks devastator squad. Or scouts...

Hope you like the Fire Hawks. They're pretty fun to paint. I like the way the red came out.

Betrayal at Badab: A Betrayal at Calth Rules Mod

UPDATE: Added Battlefleet Gothic Fleets for some of the Badab War chapters.

Hello, and welcome to the home blog post of the Betrayal at Badab project. This blog post will contain links to all of the files I have created to allow players to use the Horus Heresy: Betrayal at Calth rules specially modified for the Badab War.

This project was launched because I have always been interested in the Badab War from the first time it appeared in White Dwarf issue 101 back in 1988. I enjoyed the lore of a civil war between Space Marine chapters. As someone who loved the Warhammer 40,000 universe, but did not like the rules, I was looking for a way to play the Badab War without actually using the rules. When Games Workshop released the boxed game Horus Heresy: Betrayal at Calth, I had found the system I was looking for.

Here you will find files for playing the Badab War using the Horus Heresy: Betrayal at Calth rules. They are written by me and edited by Steve Bledsoe, who has done a great job helping me clean them up and offer suggestions.

NOTE: These files do NOT contain the rules for Horus Heresy: Betrayal at Calth. You will need a copy of the boxed game and the dice to play. These files only contain the necessary information to use forces and characters from the Badab War for Horus Heresy: Betrayal at Calth.

Click the links below to download a copy of these free files.

Update: Space Marine Specialists added, such as Librarians, Chaplains, Techmarines, a Strike Force Leader (for those who don't want to take a major Company level character), and an Apothecary.

The files include (or will later include) the following:

Command Cards for Loyalist and Secessionist forces
Weapons List
Tabletop Rules Conversion
Space Marine Specialists

Unit Cards and special characters for:
Astral Claws
Carcharodons
Executioners
Fire Hawks
Howling Griffons
Lamenters
Mantis Warriors
Marines Errant
Red Scorpions
Salamanders
Sons of Medusa

Badab War Battlefleet Gothic Fleets:
Astral Claws
Fire Hawks
Mantis Warriors
Red Scorpions
More to come...

Badab War: Mantis Warriors Tactical Squad Complete

Welcome back! Just a quick post to show the newly finished Mantis Warriors tactical squad. I've got the process down pretty well now and feel confident I can crank out the second squad a little faster. I might take a short break to finish the rest of the Fire Hawks tactical squad before I go back to the Mantis Warriors though. Something to break up painting all that green.

Here they are. Hope you enjoy!

Badab War: Mantis Warriors vs Fire Hawks

Welcome back! Welcome to the first mini battle report for my Badab War project. My friend Rob came down and we got in a game using the Betrayal at Calth rules, hereafter known as Betrayal at Badab.

Rob was supposed to bring his Lamenters to fight against my Fire Hawks. But he forgot, so we used the Mantis Warriors I had finished so far. We decided to play on a normal tabletop instead of the hex map used in the normal rules. We changed the hexes to 3" and gave the weapons normal Warhammer 40,000 ranges. I had created several special characters with their own rules as well as a set of Command Cards for both Loyalists and Secessionists.

We laid out a ruined urban tabletop, the setting of which is Bellepheron's Fall. The scenario was an assassination mission by the Fire Hawks against Mantis Warriors company commander Corvin. We figured the Fire Hawks were looking for revenge for the Mantis Warriors taking their ship Red Harbinger in a boarding action.

The Fire Hawks sent a squad of Terminators to Bellepheron's Fall in hopes of catching the Mantis Warriors in action against the Marines Errant chapter.

The Terminators teleport in after Fire Hawk scouts reported Mantis Warriors occupying a command center near an old Adeptus Mechanicus research station.

Now...on to the pics!

Venerable Secarssa, the Bow of Ma'Dan takes aim at the incoming Fire Hawks terminator squad while Shaidan, the Mantis Warriors librarian dashes across the street into cover to flank them. The dreadnoughts twin linked lascannons would prove to be a valuable asset during the game.

Two of the Fire Hawks terminators rush straight at the Mantis Warriors command. Their armor was tough and they just kept coming even in a hail of fire.

Undaunted, Captain Corvin of the Mantis Warriors stands his ground on the roof of the Mechnicum research unit. His plan was to distract the Fire Hawks by taunting them to come right at him while the rest of his command unit surrounded them. It worked...sort of.

Shaidan faces down two Terminators by himself. He manages to hold his own using his psychic attacks and misdirection powers...for a short time.

The terminators lunge at this isolated librarian and take their revenge on the Mantis Warrior for their taking of the Fire Hawks ship Red Harbinger.

Not fooled by Captain Corvin's ruse, two other Fire Hawks flank around the back of the building after dispatching a Mantis Warriors melta gun and Tranquility trained sniper.

In an epic showdown, Secarssa guns down one of the Fire Hawks to defend his Captain and then dispatches the enraged Fire Hawks terminator sergeant who rushed him. However, the Fire Hawk did manage to destroy Secarssa's arm in the process.

At this critical moment, Captain Corvin and his company color bearer jump down from the building and slice the Fire Hawks sergeant into pieces. His command was saved...but at what cost? The Fire Hawks will be back!

Badab War: Venerable Secarssa, the Bow of Ma'Dan

Time to bring out the big guns. I decided to build my Badab War opposing forces around the same composition that comes with the Betrayal at Calth box. That means two veteran Mantis Warrior tactical squads and a Dreadnought vs a Fire Hawks veteran Fire Hawks tactical squad and a Terminator squad. I'll be adding more to both forces this year, but since I'm converting the rules from Betrayal at Calth to Badab War, I wanted to start with an almost straight port over.

To that end I picked up and painted a Mantis Warriors Dreadnought. Reading the lore from the Forgeworld Badab War books, there's a Mantis Warriors Hellfire Dreadnought named Venerable Secarssa, the Bow of Ma'Dan. I used the same scheme as presented in the books with only a few minor deviations in details. I'm pretty happy with how he came out.

Hoping to finish up the rest of the tactical squads soon and get a game in.

Here's some pics. Hope you enjoy!

Badab War: Two More Fire Hawks

Howdy! Just a quick post with two more Fire Hawks for the Tactical Squad.I really like the heavy flamer model and how it came out. Just need to add the static grass to the base and some flames to the legs of both of these and they're done. More to come!

Hope you enjoy!

Badab War: More Mantis Warriors

Howdy! Quick update on the Badab War project progress. I finished painting the missile launcher and flamer for my Mantis Warriors tactical squad. I also finished the missing heavy flamer terminator for my Fire Hawks and the sergeant for their tactical squad.

Here's some pics. On deck are the Fire Hawks heavy flamer and melta gun.

I haven't added the chapter shoulder icons yet. I'm planning on getting them printed on decal paper through Fallout Hobbies.

More to come!
